Passauer Straße and Ansbacher Straße frame the historic Kaufhaus des Westens. The department store, which was founded in 1907, today has a sales area of ​​60,000m² and is the largest department store in continental Europe. Particularly in the 1920’s, Passauer Straße contributed to the area’s nickname "Charlotten­grad". With a Russian deli, a bar, a club for Russian emigrants, a Russian fashion house, a guesthouse and a library, the unusually high proportion of Russian inhabitants had a big influence on the area. Since 1938, the area around the Witten­bergplatz has belonged to the district of Schöneberg, but its Charlottenburg past can clearly be seen in both the face and the spirit of this neighborhood.

The architecture of the Maison Ouest is a prime example of the face of the new City West. Here historicism meets the future and come together in a modern symphony of styles. The two street frontages of the Maison Ouest on Passauer and Ansbacher Straße shine right up to the top floor with late nineteenth-century ‘Gründerzeit’ flair.
